The Belvoir Model Club..........a short history

Originally founded many years ago as the Grantham Model Club and re-launched in 2002 with a new name, new logo but with the same sense of purpose, have a good time and make models. In one form or another, the club has been around for over 30 years.

We are not an organised bunch but we are socialable and do not dwell on ceremony, we do however actively encourage every member to model as they please, after all modelling is all about enjoyment isn't it?

We are affiliated to the IPMS, and new members are always welcome

The Vale of Belvoir

The picturesque Vale of Belvoir situated in the East Midlands, and covers an area from Bingham in the west, Grantham in the east, Melton Mowbray in the south. Newark is just north but is not classed as an integral part of the vale. However we are far enough away from Rutland not to worry too much about it (that bit is intended for the Rutland Triad).

It is a lovely place to live, although one might not think so when the thunderstorms rattle around the Vale in the early hours.

The Vale itself is dominated by Belvoir Castle on the north side. The castle is the ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland (there's that link again!) for more than 1000 years!

In 1964 the 17th/21st Lancers Museum was established at Belvoir Castle . In 1993 the regiment amalgamated with the 16th/5th The Queens Royal Lancers to form The Queens Royal Lancers and still forms a fine display.

RAF Cottesmore and RAF Wittering are south(ish) and RAF Waddington north(ish), so consequently it is not a bad area for plane spotting.

During WW2 there were many airfields in the area, many of which played a very important role in the proceedings. The remains of many are still in existence, but unfortunately a shadow of their former selves.

We are also very fortunate, as we have in the Vale origins of the King of Cheeses. Only six dairies produce Stilton, only one is not in our area.

The original Pork Pie hails from Melton Mowbray. Hence the name Melton Mowbray Pie.

For the uninitiated, Belvoir is pronounced BEE - VER, it's an historic thing. Apparently, it means beautiful view.

On a clear day from top of Stathern Hill, you can see clear to our house.
